Terms of Service
Last updated: 23 August 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Aleksandr Lobov, an individual developer in Serbia, about your use of the Carrel app and the website at trycarrel.app. Using Carrel means you accept them. Questions: lobovlabs@proton.me.
What Carrel is
A private bookshelf. You add books you have read, are reading, or want to read. You can publish your shelf as a read-only page at trycarrel.app/{handle}.
What it costs
Carrel is free today. There are no ads, no purchases, and no subscription.
Paid plans may appear later, and if they do, here is the shape of the promise: a paid plan adds room, it does not take any away. The free shelf holds what it holds now; paying makes it taller and lets you keep more than one. Your books stay yours, stay readable, and stay editable whether you pay or not, and a shelf that is published stays published.
Nothing is charged without the price and the billing period shown to you first, and no charge happens outside Google Play. When paid plans arrive, the Subscription terms will cover renewal, cancellation, refunds and your right to withdraw, and we will tell you in the app before any of it takes effect.
Your account
You sign in with Google. One account per person. Keep your Google account secure: anyone who can sign in to it can reach your shelf.
You must be at least 16 to use Carrel.
Your content
The books you add, the names you type, and your display name are yours. We claim no ownership.
To run the service, you give us permission to store your content, show it back to you, and, only while your shelf is published, show it to visitors of your public page. That permission covers nothing else. It ends when you unpublish or delete the content.
You are responsible for what you type. Book titles and author names appear publicly if you publish your shelf, so what you write there must follow the Content & Moderation Policy. Your wishlist is not shown on your public page unless you switch it on.
Publishing
Publishing is your choice and it is off by default. You can unpublish at any time and the page stops working.
If you change your handle, the old address stops working and we do not redirect it. Anyone you sent the old link to will get nothing. Your old handle stays reserved for you for 30 days, so if you change your mind, you can take it back. There is one exception: a handle you have held for less than a day is not reserved at all, and goes straight back into circulation. The assumption there is that you are fixing a typo, not leaving an address other people already have.
What you may not do
- Break the law, or use Carrel to harm someone.
- Post content that breaks the Content & Moderation Policy.
- Pretend to be someone else, or take a handle to impersonate a person or an organisation.
- Scrape the service, hammer it with automated requests, or try to reach data that is not yours.
- Try to break, overload, or find holes in the service. If you find a security problem, tell us at lobovlabs@proton.me; we would rather hear it from you.
What we may do
If you break these terms or the content policy, we may hide a single book from your public page, take the whole page down, or suspend or close your account. Hiding is not deleting: the book stays on your own shelf and stays yours to edit, and only visitors stop seeing it. For anything short of illegal content we will tell you what we did and which rule it falls under, and you can reply and ask us to look again. Illegal content is removed straight away and reported to the authorities where the law requires it.
We may also change the app, add features, or take features away. If something you rely on is going to disappear, we will say so before it does.
No warranty
Carrel is provided as it is. We do not promise it will always be available, always be free of faults, or never lose data. It is a small app made by one person.
If you are in the United States: TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CARREL IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
Keep your own copy of anything that matters to you. If you want your shelf as a file, ask at lobovlabs@proton.me and we will send it to you.
If you are a consumer in the EEA or the UK, this section does not cut into the rights the law gives you over digital content and digital services, and it never will: those rights cannot be signed away, and we are not trying to.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost data, or lost profits. Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, fraud, or anything else that cannot be limited by law.
If you are a consumer in the EEA or the UK, your statutory rights are not affected by anything in these terms, and you can bring proceedings in the courts of the country where you live.
Ending it
You can delete your account at any time, from the app or from /delete-account. Deletion removes your profile, your settings, and all your books, and takes down your public page. It cannot be undone. Details of what stays in backups are in the Privacy Policy.
We may close an account for the reasons above, or if we shut the service down. If Carrel is ever discontinued, we will give notice in the app and time to export your shelf.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of Serbia. If you are a consumer in the EEA or the UK, the mandatory consumer law of your own country still applies to you, and nothing here takes it away.
Changes to these terms
New versions appear here with a new date. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Carrel after that means you accept the new version. If you would rather not accept it, you can delete your account before the change takes effect, from the app or from /delete-account.
