Delete your account
Last updated: 23 August 2026
You can delete your Carrel account and everything in it. This page explains how, and exactly what goes.
From the app
- Open Carrel.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Delete my account.
- Confirm. You will be asked twice, because this cannot be undone.
Your account is gone as soon as you confirm, and you are signed out.
Without the app
If you have uninstalled Carrel or cannot sign in, email lobovlabs@proton.me from the same email address you use to sign in with Google, with the subject Delete my account.
That address is how we know it is you, so a request sent from any other address cannot be accepted. We do not ask for anything else: no ID, no reason.
We delete the account within 30 days and reply to confirm.
Delete some of it, and keep the account
You can remove one thing at a time. Each of these works on its own, and the rest of your shelf stays as it is.
One book. Open the book on your shelf and tap Remove, then tap again to confirm. The book leaves your shelf and, if your shelf is published, your public page.
Your public page. Open Settings and switch publishing off. trycarrel.app/{handle} stops working, and your books stay where they are.
Your wishlist, or the page in search results. Two more switches sit next to the one that publishes. One keeps your wishlist off the public page. The other asks search engines to leave the page out of their results.
Anything else. Email lobovlabs@proton.me from the same address you sign in with and say what you want removed. We answer within 30 days, and in practice within a day.
Whatever you remove this way leaves the live database as soon as you remove it. It stays in backups on the same terms as everything else below: up to 14 days in daily copies, up to 12 months in monthly ones. Everything you kept stays where it is, and so does your account.
What gets deleted
- Your profile: name, email address, handle, Google account identifier.
- Every book on your shelf, with its title, author, status, dates, and colour.
- Your shelf display settings, and the record of the edits you made to your shelf.
- Your public page.
trycarrel.app/{handle}stops working immediately. If you delete the account in the app, nobody can take your handle for 30 days, so links you shared cannot start pointing at someone else’s shelf; the record keeps only the handle and the date. If we delete the account at your request by email, the handle is released at once.
What stays, and for how long
- Backups. Deleted data remains in daily backups for up to 14 days, and in monthly backups for up to 12 months. Backups are encrypted and used only to restore the whole service after a failure, never to bring one account back. After that they expire and the data is gone.
- A note that this account was deleted: the account identifier and the date, for one year. No name, no email. If we ever have to restore the whole database from a backup, this note is what makes sure your account is deleted again instead of quietly coming back.
- Crash reports, if the app ever crashed on your device. They contain no personal data and are kept for 90 days.
- Records of a complaint, if a complaint was ever made about your shelf. Kept for 12 months, because we may have to show how we handled it.
- A record of a moderation action, if we ever hid something on your public page or reserved a handle for you: what was done, when and why, kept for 12 months. It can include the title of the book concerned. This record outlives the account, for the same reason the complaint record does.
- Cached copies elsewhere. If your shelf was published, search engines and messaging apps may hold a copy for a while. We cannot clear those.
Carrel takes no payments today. If it ever does, a record of a purchase will have to stay after the account is gone, because accounting law requires it, and this page will say exactly which fields and for how long before the first payment is taken.
This does not touch your Google account
Deleting your Carrel account does not delete or change your Google account. To remove Carrel's access to it, go to myaccount.google.com/permissions and remove Carrel.
Before you go
Deletion cannot be undone, and there is no grace period. If you want a copy of your shelf first, email lobovlabs@proton.me and we will send you a machine-readable file before deleting anything.
